Meet the Press

Tweet It!

Despite many consecutive days of rain, the sky held back its waters on Sunday for San Anto. The brightly colored La Musica de San Anto mural on Commerce Street served as the backdrop for Sunday's Press Conference announcing the 12th Annual Huevos Rancheros Gala and Silent Art Auction. The festive colors and images on the mural were a stunning juxtaposition against the dark and ominous sky, but the weather held. Two cameras and one newspaper reporter showed up to cover the proceedings, which was an usually large number for a press conference for a nonprofit's fundraiser; something special was clearly in the air that morning.

Manny seemed to reign over the event with the podium, speakers, and arte laid out before him. His image in the background was a powerful reminder of whose legacy we will honor on October 3rd. It also represented how Manny's life and work form the background, the foundation, of what we do at San Anto, and that he will be present in everything we do in the life of the organization.

Current Executive Director Heather Eichling kicked off the event by talking about San Anto's mission, and filling in some of the details about the Huevos Rancheros Gala and Silent Art Auction. She explained that Huevos actually started out as a bit of a joke-- Manny started talking about the fundraisers and galas other organizations do, and how if San Anto were to do a gala we would need to serve something simple (and cheap) like huevos rancheros. The idea grew from there into a reality, and twelve years later it is bigger and better than anyone at those initial could have imagined.

Board member and original co-founder Cruz Ortiz took over the mic next to talk more about Manny's legacy within the organization. He talked about how easy a decision it was to name Manny King Huevo after his passing in January because of all he did for the organization, arts, and the Westside, despite not being an artist himself. San Anto decided to name Manny's mother, Rafaela Castillo, Queen Huevo to honor another major facet of Manny's life that was close to his heart: his family.
Manny's sister, Diana Farias, took the mic after Cruz to give a meaningful tribute from her family's perspective. She talked about how much it meant to them as a family to watch their brother and his organization grow from a dream to a reality, and she said how much they love seeing the programs' participants grow and flourish in the environment he created. She expressed her thanks for the many tributes San Anto and other groups have done for her brother, and she talked about how excited she and the rest of her family is for Huevos and for her parents to be King and Queen.

Then, in an exciting preview of what is to come in less than 3 weeks, representatives of SACA crowned Mr. and Mrs. Castillo King and Queen Huevos. This was just a symbolic crowning, however; they will formally establish their reign at Huevos on October 3.

The press conference wrapped up after we crowned our royalty, but people hung around to look at the art Cruz brought that will be auctioned off on October 3. A volunteer brought coffee and pan dulce for everyone, leaving most of us hyped up on caffeine and with a dusting of sparkling sugar on our lips and fingers. The press conference was a great success-- thanks so much to everyone who came out and supported SACA, Huevos Rancheros, and Manny's legacy. We couldn't do it without you!

Since there won't be a designated time for a public sharing at Huevos with everything else going on to honor Manny and his family, please take advantage of this opportunity.

What Came First? ¿Los Huevos Rancheros o Manuel?

Tweet It!

It almost seems hard to remember now whether Huevos Rancheros or Manuel "Manny" Castillo came first, the two have been so synonymous for so many years. Of course the delicious huevos rancheros breakfast has been a tradition on Westside breakfast menus and on kitchen tables for generations, but the Huevos Rancheros Gala and Silent Art Auction, only in its 12th year, feels every bit as important in this community as the simple eggs and ranchero sauce dish that lend the event its name.

Manny and San Anto started the Huevos Rancheros Gala and Silent Art Auction as a means of raising money for the organization. But if you think of $60 plates, a fancy dress code, and glitter when you hear the word "gala," think again. In the spirit of generosity and the organization's mission, entrance into Huevos has always been by donation-- allowing some of the community residents SACA serves the same opportunity to enjoy a great gala event as someone who is able to write a bigger check.

Ever since that first year, SACA always honors a King and Queen Huevo, individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts community and/or the Westside, to preside over the Gala. In the event's history there have been 22 kings and queens, including individuals like Patti Radle, Cruz Ortiz, Linda Pace, Jesse Treviño, Lila Cockrell, Al Aguilar, Andy Benavides, Eva Ybarra, and many others.

Other fixtures of the event include the Silent Art Auction and music by favorite local bands. The event has continued to grow and expand over the last twelve years, and this year should prove to be the biggest and best yet. At the place of primary importance and honor is Manny, who will be honored posthumously as our 2009 King Huevo. Who better to reign over this year's event than the man who helped create it, the man who devoted his life to arte y cultura on the Westside? We say, nadie. He will be represented by his father, Manuel Castillo, Sr., and his mother, Rafaela Castillo, will be honored as Queen Huevo.

This year's highlights will also include music by Los #3 Dinners and DJ Tony Rocha, catering by Lisa's Mexican Restaurant, poems about the monarchs by Santiago Garcia, and some of the best arte by local artists ever to be featured in the event. Not only will this year's event be a moving tribute to this neighborhood's ambassador, but it will also be a fun time for the gente to enjoy the ambiente of art, good food, and music.

Starting tomorrow (September 9) we will be posting the art pieces that will be available for bidding at the Silent Art Auction, along with a description of the piece and the artist. We'll try to post them every day or every other day so that you can get excited about and poised to bid on the outstanding art we will be featuring this year. Check back often-- you never know what will be showcased next!

Stay tuned for more sneak peaks and details about Huevos 2K9. Wear your Huevos pride loud, proud, and often. So does it matter what came first, los Huevos Rancheros o Manuel? No. The two are forever entwined in our minds, memories, and hearts, and SACA will do it up right to honor them both for years to come.

Out of a Simple Juicebox, a Pinhole View to the World

Tweet It!

Twelve Students. Black electrical tape. A small sliver of silver. Two rolls of film. One juicebox. Unlimited potential.

On an ardiente, sticky day in June, photographer Mari Hernandez came to San Anto to show twelve El Placazo students how to turn the ordinary into something extraordinary: a simple Juicy Juice juicebox into a pinhole camera. At first, the students were skeptical. But as they sipped and slurped on their juiceboxes, thoroughly enjoying the apple-flavored contents, Mari showed them how it was possible.

Mari showed the students how to cut a large hole in the back of the juicebox (where the light hits the film) and a small pinhole in the front to function as the lens. She put the small piece of silver aluminum (also with a pinhole in it) over the pinhole in the juicebox, and taped it down to complete the lens. She created the shutter out of a small piece of electrical tape. Then she showed the students how to connect two film canisters-- an old, empty one, and a new, unused one-- to feed the good film into the old canister after it has been used. Then they mounted the two canisters onto either side of the large hole in the back, and sealed out all the light with the black electrical tape so that the film wouldn't be prematurely exposed. And with that, they had created a pinhole camera.

Once the students had their cameras in hand, they were ready to go! They raced out of the office into the sunshine, taking pictures of the fence, the cars on the street, the flowers and trees, each other, and anything else they could make their hands stay still enough to capture. Unlike digital cameras, the images captured in juicebox pinhole cameras are a mystery until the fotos are developed. There is no instant gratification with a pinhole camera, there is no deleting if there is too much light or you caught your friend at a bad angle, so that taught the students to be intentional about the fotos they took, a lesson often forgotten in the current age of thoughtless point, shoot, delete, and retake. The students also experimented with light exposure times, learning that the longer they left the shutter flap up, the more light would be let in, and vice versa.
Occasionally a clear, distinct image would come through when the fotos were developed, and those images often looked like the old timey pictures taken on the first cameras. More often, however, the fotos would be canvases for beautiful, abstract blazes of color and light.

The Little Two-Room Office That Could

Tweet It!
San Anto Cultural Arts might look pretty unassuming from the outside. In fact, it often gets confused for the non-profits on either side of us. But if you open the bright red door set against the uniquely-green building, what you will find is a glorious chaos of creativity, sweat, and love hard at work. Whether it's the middle and elementary school El Placazo students learning how to be hard core journalists, mural crew members of the CMP brainstorming ideas for the latest mural to adorn the Westside, or volunteers and community residents stopping by to help out, there is always something going on. This little, two-room office daily unlocks the potential of the community residents who venture inside its door, and empowers everyone it touches, both directly and indirectly.

A lot of significant events have happened around San Anto over the last several months: the "Una Mesa Para La Gente" mural restoration was blessed and dedicated in February; we hosted a Texas Public Radio member event in March; the Placazo students delivered a poetry slam at the San Jacinto Senior Home for National Poetry Month in April; we led our first-ever Mural Bike Tour around the Westside in July; the Placazo students participated in the third annual Summer Foto Workshop and Exhibit, which was showcased at Guadalupe Street Coffee in August; and new articles for El Placazo and new murals for the CMP are being conceptualized all the time.

Perhaps the biggest change in the organization's history occurred in January with the passing of our fearless leader, Manuel "Manny" Castillo, Jr. Manny was one of San Anto's original three founders and was the only Executive Director the organization has ever had. He made tremendous contributions to the Westside and the wider arts world, and his absence is felt deeply through everyone and everything he touched. While he is greatly missed, his memory is with us always, and San Anto tries to honor his memory in everything we do.

This blog is a chance for you to keep up with all of the great things going on around this little two-room office that could. We've got a lot of awesome things coming up on the radar: the Huevos Rancheros Gala and Silent Art Auction, honoring Manny as King Huevo, on October 3, 2009; the Dia de los Muertos Barrio Procession on November 2; the blessing and dedication of our biggest mural ever, La Musica de San Anto, on November 21, 2009; another Bike Tour con Murals in December; and hopefully a new building purchase. So hold on to your chones-- we're getting down!
