Kimberly Aubuchon is an artist, curator, and gallery director who was born in rural Illinois in 1967 on an air force base, grew up in Missouri, and currently resides in San Antonio, Texas with a great boyfriend, and two cats. She earned a BFA in 2001 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an emphasis in painting and drawing. An exhibiting artist herself, she has recently had solo exhibitions, For the Birds at Joan Grona Gallery, San Antonio, TX (2008); and A Freak’s Show in Gallery 4 at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, San Antonio, TX (2007); and recent group shows include, 74th Annual San Antonio Artist League Exhibition at the San Antonio Art League, TX (2008); Bowling in the Wind at Sala Diaz, San Antonio, TX (2007); Forking Paths at Mode Gallery, Chicago, IL (2007); Welcome to Mañaland at fl!ght gallery, San Antonio, TX (2007); and Letterforms at 1906 Gallery, San Antonio, TX (2007).
In 2002, Aubuchon founded Unit B (Gallery), an artist-run gallery space, in her apartment just south of downtown Chicago. During its Chicago incarnation the gallery exhibited 120 artists in 30 group shows, and 3 art fairs. Now located in San Antonio, TX in a domestic duplex apartment since January 2006, the San Antonio re-incarnation has showcased 49 artists and 6 guest curators in 12 group shows. Aubuchon has also curated and co-curated independent group shows in Chicago, Detroit, Houston, and San Antonio. Her most recent curatorial projects include Min-Tse Chen:Story at Joan Grona Gallery, San Antonio, TX (2008); and the traveling exhibitionGoin’ Mobile which has and will travel through Houston, Chicago, San Antonio, and Laredo (2007-09).
Working by day as an archivist at Artpace, Aubuchon is surrounded by the art world, in fact she knows no other world. She is very involved in the San Antonio arts community, is a member of the Friends of Contemporary Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art, is on the Board of Directors of Contemporary Art Month, is currently serving on the Artist Selection Committee for Luminaria, and has served on the Artists Foundations ArtBall Entertainment Committee.
